S.B. Redd (The Maverick) is an award-winning former print journalist who has made the transition to becoming a published author. As an author S.B. Redd main strength was versatility during his fifteen-year career in printing journalism; and boy you can see that in is duet novel Temptation.com. Although he worked primarily as a sports reporter; he also wrote on topics like religion and politics as a free lance writer for a national magazine.
Temptation.com will take your imagination into the internet world like you’ve never imagined before. Mr. Redd will have you squirming in your seat as he takes you in to online dating, and sexual online porn addictions.
You may ask yourself; now how can S.B. Redd transform from being a sports writer to a black erotica fiction writer? Well Bigmouthz.com had the pleasure to ask Mr. Redd that question and we also asked how his work is different from all the veterans in the Black Erotic game now.
Bigmouthz: After being a Sports Reporter for 10 years, what inspired you to write Temptation.com?
Redd: I’ve been out of the newspaper business since 2000. I stopped writing on a free-lance basis in 2004. When I started on Temptation.com, it was in April 2007 -- a span of more than three years since I attempted to write anything of any significance. I had stumbled upon a website that shall not be named. There was a bulletin board of other people’s material on it. Several of them had a string of replies. Out of curiosity, I decided to post something up there just to see if anyone would respond. That first posting produced at least a dozen replies and people wanting more. One even suggested that it should appear on the book shelves. Another reason for going all out with writing a book is because I never completed one that I started back around 1995. I’ve always been one to say that I’ve accomplished whatever I started in life.
Bigmouthz: Was the transformation easy?
Redd: For me, writing is writing. I’ve been writing in some public capacity dating back to the ninth grade when I worked on my junior high newspaper. But the biggest transformation that I had to make was making sure that my work was reader friendly over the course of 80,000 words. I found out that I still had a lot of “reporter” in me. That meant there were changes in style, dialogue tags, and verb tense usage that I had to make. I also had to be mindful of not using too many words that a reader might need a dictionary while reading Temptation.com. Once I understood those changes, it’s been a breeze and I’ve been able to help others.
Bigmouthz: What is Temptation.com about?
Redd: The central message is shedding light on the excesses of sexual and online porn addiction and its effects on the lives of that individual and those closest to him or her. We all know of someone who has an addiction. Some overcome while others succumb to it. Also, I think I give a realistic picture about that underworld of adult dating and adult sex websites. So if you’re into the grown and very sexy stuff, and you want to feel like you’re a part of those scorching sex scenes, you might want to have a towel ready because this book will make you sweat and blush.
Bigmouthz: Wow now that’s straight to the point lol. How did you come up with the title Temptation.com?
Redd: The first title that I came up with was Taming the Amazon. But about eight chapters into writing this manuscript the word ‘temptation’ came to mind, and knowing this would have something to do with the Internet the .com part was easy; hence, Temptation.com. My only concern was while I searched for a publisher that nobody else came up with the title. I guess it was meant for me.
Bigmouthz: Yes the title is all yours; and it describes the book to it’s entirely. How long did you take you to write Temptation.com?
Redd: It took 3.5 months. I finished it in late July 2007.
Bigmouthz: Who is your favorite character in the book and did you find any similarity between you and the character?
Redd: I write about issues that I want to address, and the characters sort of just come to me. So the message rather than the characters is more important. I learned long ago that nothing is really wasted in life, if we‘re striving to achieve goals that we set. We’ll eventually draw upon many things that we’ve experienced and there may be some application of it. But as you can imagine, it’s already assumed that there must be some correlation between the story’s main character (Royale Cole) and the author (me). That’s far from the truth.
Bigmouthz: There’s tuff competition out there when it comes to black romance and erotica novels; authors like Jerome Dickey, Zane, and Mary B. Morrison has made a name for themselves and have the industry basically on lock. What makes your work different from the authors mentioned?
Redd: I’ve met two of the three authors, and I’ve read all three of their works. I recently had an online encounter with a female fan of one of the three writers who asked me a similar question. I gave her a list of specific examples why my writing was different than her favorite author, and I also invited her to read a chapter excerpt of my book. In her response, she agreed that my work was no doubt different, which she said she found refreshing. Hopefully, she bought a copy of my book.
Bigmouthz: Hopefully lol. Do you have any words of wisdom for folks that are trying to get noticed in the publisher industry?
Redd: I’m still learning about that one. It’s an accomplishment to have a book published whether it was self-published or published via the traditional route (an actual publisher), which is the path that I chose.
Bigmouthz: Are you going to publish more books like Temptation.com or are you going to step out of the box; what should we expect?
Redd: There’s three things that I’ve said readers should expect when reading my work: a different voice; a different style; and no apologies, always written with an edge to it. Now my publisher (Jessica Tilles of Xpress Yourself Publishing) has already indicated that she wants to publish my next book, and she already has the manuscript. I expect for that to be available in 2010.
Bigmouthz: Where can Bigmouthz.com readers purchase the book?
Redd: Here are a few outlets:

Bigmouthz: Thanks Mr. Redd for giving Bigmouthz.com readers an inside look in to your book. Bigmouthz wish you much success.
